Home Heating Assistance

While Aroostook Agency on Aging does not provide home heating or energy assistance services directly, we are committed to ensuring that older adults and their families have access to the support they need.

If you are struggling with heating costs or energy emergencies, we strongly encourage you to reach out to Avec Community Action. They are a trusted local organization that administers several vital energy assistance programs for income-eligible households.

Below is an overview of the programs Avec offers. To apply or learn more, please contact Avec Community Action directly at 207-764-3721 or by emailing info@avecmaine.org.

Programs Available Through Avec Community Action

1

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP / HEAP)

What it is: Financial assistance to help eligible households pay for everyday energy costs.

How to apply: HEAP applications can be completed online, over the phone, or in person.

2

Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP)

What it is: Emergency assistance for households facing an immediate energy crisis, such as an emergency fuel delivery or an electrical disconnection.

Eligibility: Households must be HEAP-eligible, lack the financial means to avert the crisis, and be at or below a 1/8 tank of oil (or facing imminent electrical disconnection).

ECIP requests are limited each day. If all daily slots are filled, you will need to call back the next business day.

3

Low Income Assistance Program

What it is: Additional support specifically designed to assist HEAP-eligible customers with their electric bill payments.

4

Weatherization Assistance Program

What it is: A comprehensive, no-cost Energy Audit conducted by certified professionals to find the best ways to reduce your home's heating costs. Improvements may include air sealing, wall and attic insulation, weather stripping, caulking, and basic health and safety or moisture controls.

Eligibility: Available to HEAP-eligible applicants with incomes below 200% of federal poverty guidelines.

Priority: Households are placed on a waitlist and ranked based on need, with priority given to households with seniors (age 60+), children age six or under, individuals with disabilities, high fuel usage costs, and lower income levels.

5

Central Heating Improvement Program

What it is: Assistance for income-eligible households to improve their heating systems. This can include cleaning, tuning, evaluation, burner retrofit, repair, replacement, or conversion.

Eligibility: Household must be HEAP-eligible. Priority is given to those currently in a "no-heat" situation.
